Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino Review

The internets are all a twitter because of the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino. Starbucks had an amazing marketing push before hand.. leaked photos and such got people sharing and by the time it was released, everyone had to have one (at least in my group of unicorn loving friends). Maybe it was because it was a Unicorn Frappuccino and Unicorns are all the rage right now, maybe it was because we were all so burnt out from tax weekend and we needed something to look forward to. Who knows. Whatever it was, it took off and now stores are sold out or close to it 24 hours into the release of the drink.

Let’s talk about the drink itself. The Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino is in essence, a milkshake. All of the non-coffee frappuccino’s are, heck, all blended coffees are a mix of milk, ice, sugar, and coffee — so blended coffee = milkshake. This means it will be sweet, high in sugar, calories and so on. That’s ok — it’s a milkshake, it’s supposed to be high in calories, sugars and so on. I would be disappointed if I picked one up and it was thin and lacking in all of the things I want from a frappuccino.

My facebook feed is full of people saying no one should buy this because it is so bad for you. First, I have an issue with foods being labeled as good or bad. Foods are not good or bad, they just are. Some foods make our bodies feel good and some foods make our bodies feel bad. But that is different for every person. Every person will react to the amount of sugar in this frappuccino differently, every person reacts to soy differently and so on. For example, soy is considered by many to be a “good” food. But for me, not good. I am allergic to soy and while almost impossible to totally eradicate it from my diet, I keep my intake of soy as low as possible. Second, what I or other people eat is none ya business.

Why is what I, or anyone else, eat none of your business. Well, first my body is not something you have control over. I have all of the control over my body. I get to decide what I put in and on my body. If I want to wear leather chaps and eat burritos all day long, well, I can do that. If I want to diet and wear mumu’s, I can do that too. If I think Unicorn Frappuccino’s are the best thing for my body and want to have one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner — also my call. You are more than welcome to not get one, that is your choice. But, shaming me or anyone else who has decided to try the new craze — not ok.

What did I think of the Unicorn Frappuccino — I actually kind of liked it. It is sweet and sour and a fun treat. The colors are bright and the sugar sprinkles on top turned to a purple color as I drank it. Think tart pie, or crushed up sweet tarts, or sour skittles. It pretty much tastes like that. If you like a little sour, you will probably enjoy the Unicorn Frappuccino. Hannah and I are heading to Starbucks this afternoon so she can try the magical goodness…
